Illustration Friday's theme : ocean
My entry is a Ross's Gull. The Ross's Gull was first spotted in the United States in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1975 and was such a big deal to local bird watchers, that the camera crews from the Boston news stations were called out. Previously it was thought to only live in the Arctic.
I drew him in colored pencil. It was very challenging to create all the grays' in his feathers, but it was fun!

Rooster gets blue

Had another fun Saturday adding some blue feathers to my little friend here. I'll let that dry a bit and then add more detail in the blue feathers so you can tell the lighter colored feathers sit on top. then for the background. I usually leave that for last. This one I'll be using for some decorative images, as well as selling the original and prints, so I may scan it in after the feathers are done and before I add the background. Much less to delete in Photoshop! I'll let the white help me timewise.
I never really thought I'd be painting a rooster! It's surprising even me. Enjoy! I may have to do more.

Great Horned Owl stage 1

I promised a Great Horned Owl. Here's the light pencil sketch. This took me about an hour. It helps to get all the eyes and beak and main owl parts down first before trying to add any colored pencil. It's much easier to erase at this point! Once you start adding color, it's way to late to more eye balls around! At least for me.
Red Tailed Hawk finally finished

It's been a long road with this guy! Layer upon layer of color and feathers. But I truly enjoyed the trip! For anyone who takes a look and leaves a comment, I will be writing down your names and pulling them out of a hat next weekend, and the winner will receive an 8 x 10 giclee from yours truly to thank you for your continued support!
Next up will be a Great Horned Owl I think! Everyone loves my first owl and my "Happy Owl-o-ween" card so go with the flow!

Red Tailed Hawk stage 5

Wow, never posted so many stages. Thanks for all of your comments and encouragement!
Last night I got out my pencils again and added more layers of color. I added several oranges, about 4 shades of brown, and 2 greys. I think I am almost done! I think there are a few areas to darken up even more and then I'll call it a day! I need to grab some reds also for a few spaces where the oranges need it. Hope you enjoy!

Ross's Gull larger!!!

I redrew this guy at twice the size to get all those feathers in. I have new admiration for God and His ability to baffle the bird artist with so much perfection and design! Wow. I'm really impressed! Wait until you see the nice variety of gray and black against the white. It makes a big "M" on his back for "Miraculous"!!!

Dove- Lucy on the porch

Here's Lucy!!! sounds like the name of a show! This is the first drawing I have done of these birds without using the pen and ink. I'd love lots of feedback as to whether you prefer them with the pen and ink. Thanks!

Piping Plovers

I wasn't sure I'd post this, just because the baby bird is so darned ugly it looks like a space creature! Maybe that's why they are endangered...Mom can't bear to look at her babies! LOL! But I live near Newburyport, Massachusetts and they shut down Plum Island for a bit during nesting season so these little creatures can have the beaches to themselves to nest and hopefully get off the endangered species list. Hope you get a kick out of the baby! Or tell me he's the ugliest thing you've every seen and I'll take him down! LOL!!!
