White throated sparrow

I drew this first with pen and ink and then went into it with colored pencils. Hope you enjoy it! I think it's a white throated sparrow. Correct me if I'm wrong! I'm really getting into drawing birds lately.

I'm no ornithologist, so I don't know what it is, but I think the image is beautiful!

Oh, it's beautiful!!! Whatever in the world made you think you couldn't draw birds??!!

It is funny how we get it in our heads that we "can't" draw something. I think your birds are beautiful! You drew cats before, and you did them very well too. Personally, I find them harder to do than birds. Do you feel you can't draw cats either?

My birds from yesteryear, were feeble ideas of what birds looked like, without ever really "looking" at them. I think a lot of artists feel they can't draw something if they don't take a really good look at it. Most of my first figure drawings had no feet or hands. Then I went to class 3 times in row and just drew hands and feet! I got over that fear. It's the same with birds i guess. Clunky imaginary birds will never compete with really looking! And practice! Thanks for all the nice comments!

Beautiful. If you get a chance can you share a couple of words of wisdom about colored pencils and penciling?

Well, first get yourself some nice drawing paper. Some like smooth bristol board to start with, later you can use whatever you want. Then get a nice set of colored pencils, like Prismacolors. They are soft and buttery, not like the ones you used in grade school which were hard as a brick. Get a good electric pencil sharpener and put some points on those babies! Then go at it, doodling, making hatch marks, pressing soft for shading, a bit harder for more intense colors, Color one over the other to see what you end up with. Try some simple shapes like a globe or a rectangle and work on shading. That's how I got started. Good luck with your experiments. Then you will see what you've been missing and you'll want to try them over dry pen and ink drawings, or vice versa. I just love them. I wish my order would get here! Try DickBlick.com . He's having a great sale.
