 COLORED PENCIL CLASS

This class is for students who want to learn to draw with colored pencils or just want a class to practice and improve your skills. Explore various techniques in colored pencil: preserving highlights, creating volume, building layers of color, mixing for dark rich colors, creating interesting backgrounds, new highlighting techniques. You will work from photos and improve your own personal technique and style. Come meet new friends and see samples of colored pencil artwork from around the globe!

What to bring: Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils (minimum 36 pencil set), battery operated pencil sharpener, kneaded eraser, hard white eraser, 2B pencil, colorless blender pencil or marker #1 long liner paint brush (for whiskers and hairs).

Some great papers to work on like: Canson Mi-Teintes, Stonehenge, Strathmore, Colourfix Sanded Papers. Choose a variety of colors, not just white. Check them out online at www.dickblick.com for great prices. Other great surfaces for colored pencil are hot pressed watercolor paper, vellum bristol board. DO NOT BUY MIXED MEDIA PAPER. IT DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH TOOTH FOR COLORED PENCILS.

Class starts: Monday, May 23, 2022, and runs for eight weeks, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (No class on Labor Day). Fee is $160.00. A maximum or 8 students will be admitted so sign up early to hold a spot. A minimum of 3 students is required to hold class.

To hold your spot: Please mail a check directly to: Revelle Taillon, 26 West Pine Street, Plaistow, NH 03865. For more information and to see if this class is full, call 603-548-6694 or email Revelle at rtaillon@comcast.net.

Drawing a Barn Owl in Colored Pencil

I started this drawing in January, 2018, and it it took me about 50 hours to complete. As usual, I start by drawing in basic details of the animal's parts, and features, then I slowly erase all the graphite pencil as I add my colored pencil. This image shows the very start of the drawing.
50 hours later, I was finally finished. The size is 11 x 14 inches and I drew it on Canson Mi-Tientes paper, with about 60 colors, all types of professional colored pencils, like Luminance, Prismacolor, Caran D'Ache.
I entered it in the Seacoast Artist Association's April 2018 theme show, in Exeter NH, "Feathers and Fur", and I'm proud to say it was selected as "Best in Show".  Here's how it looked after it was framed.
I'll be offering a class called Colored Pencil II which starts May 22, 2018, at the Seacoast Artist Association, See above for details.

Happy Spring!

Hi all,
I wanted to update you with a little piece of colored pencil work that I'm almost finished with. It's a Lilac Breasted Roller, famous in Africa I'm sure, for it's gorgeous colors!

This is the first time I've worked on  a colored pencil drawing with Caran d'Ache Luminance Colored Pencils. I must say, I like them. They are a bit difficult to sharpen, as they are very soft. I couldn't get a really sharp point with my battery operated sharpener, and my electric sharpener is a bit too small for the width of the pencil tip. I would suggest an x-acto knife.

I am working on a brownish Canson paper on the smooth side. I still am going to add background details, hopefully this week!

Illustration Friday's theme : ocean

My entry is a Ross's Gull. The Ross's Gull was first spotted in the United States in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1975 and was such a big deal to local bird watchers, that the camera crews from the Boston news stations were called out. Previously it was thought to only live in the Arctic.

I drew him in colored pencil. It was very challenging to create all the grays' in his feathers, but it was fun!

Boston Terrier Dog finished

Finally finished my first Boston Terrier. I'm very happy with the way he came out. I think I may be brave enough now to try my German Shepherd, Cleopatra. She has tons of black in her coat. This was a good learning experience.

Boston Terrier 4

Moving right along! I'm adding more purples, blues, dark reds and finally some black. I've also added more color on his nose, muzzle and chin. I'm kinda liking him! I need to tone down the highlights on the right side of the face and add more darks and mid tones around the muzzle and the right side. I find it very helpful to put the work away for a day or two and come back to it with fresh eyes. And seeing it on the computer monitor, next to the previous layers, always helps me "see" what changes I want to make.

Boston Terrier 3

I've started to define the dark areas more with some indigo blue and magenta. I'll slowly work those areas darker, as I add more lights to show contrast. Not happy with the nose yet. Dog noses are really difficult things to draw in case you didn't know. This one already has four or five layers of color!

Boston Terrier 2

Now I have fixed the crooked eye, don't know if you can tell, and I might go back into it later. I started to add more color. I've used a soft blue gray and several other grays. Also added two different pinks to certain areas. Now I'm adding indigo blue where all the black are. I like to build up my blacks with dark blues and browns and dark reds if I can. The colors all shine through when you look at it closely and it makes a rich black.. I've also started to define all the edges of the face and neck. This is so much fun!
