ACRYLIC PAINTING 

Starts September 14, 2026 

Join this class, where we will explore various subject matter, learn how to mix the colors you are trying to match, different mediums to try and various techniques to improve your painting skills. You will learn glazing and special attention will be given to various techniques in blending your acrylics.

Class: runs Mondays, starting September 14, for 8 weeks from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. Fee is $190.00. No refunds. A percentage of the fee is donated to the Seacoast Artist Association scholarship fund. A minimum of 3, and a maximum of 7 students will be admitted.

What to bring: Sturdy Tabletop Easel, Acrylic Paints: Titanium,White, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium & Light, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Medium & Light, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean, Phthalo, & Ultramarine Blues, Mars Black, Unbleached Titanium, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre. 

Brushes: a variety large to small: rounds, filberts and flats, (manmade fibers are fine) mop brush (or large fluffy makeup brush). Palette knife. Matte acrylic painting medium. Pad of disposable palette paper, a pencil, eraser, masking tape. Water container, a rag. 

Bring: either/or: canvas paper, canvas boards or primed stretched canvas, no larger than 12" x 12".

Learn to Draw

CHARCOAL

Class Starts February 16, 2026

Exeter NH


You must have some drawing experience.

This is a drawing class for those of you who would like to learn the secrets of this wonderful medium, and those of you who may have some experience but want to learn more. This class will teach you the difference between different types of charcoal & blending techniques you can try. Each class will start with samples of art created in charcoal and I will teach you: how to make different marks, linear & side strokes, ways to blend white and black charcoals on various supports, using your erasers to pull out highlights. Charcoals are very versatile and you can create simple or complex drawings.


WHAT TO BRING 

Charcoal set with: compressed charcoal, charcoal pencils in black and white, vine charcoal, pencil sharpener, 2 kneaded erasers, 9 x 12 newsprint pad, 9 x 12 charcoal paper pad, fixative spray, paper stumps, sandpaper pad for sharpening, and a small set of inexpensive paintbrushes. Also bring newspaper for under your work each week, paper towels, drawing pencil, waxed paper to protect your finished work, masking tape, drawing board (if you have one) or make one from a sheet of foam core (dollar store) cut in half & taped together on 3 sides (you can also use this to transport your finished artwork). Please wear clothing you do not mind getting dirty.

This class is for students who want to learn to draw with colored pencils or just want a colored pencil class to practice and improve your skills. Explore various techniques and new surfaces to draw on in colored pencil. How to get your highlights, how to creating volume, how to build layers of color, mixing colors for dark rich colors, interesting background techniques. Improve your personal style. Come meet new friends and see samples of colored pencil artwork from around the globe!

What to bring: Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils (minimum 36 pencil set), battery operated pencil sharpener, kneaded eraser, hard white eraser, 2B pencil, colorless blender pencil or marker.


Some great papers to work on: Start with Strathmore Colored Pencil Paper but also try: Colourfix Sanded Papers, Canson Mi-Teintes, Stonehenge. Choose a variety of colors, not just white. Check them out online at www.dickblick.com for great prices. Other great surfaces for colored pencil are hot pressed watercolor paper, Vellum Bristol Board. DO NOT BUY MIXED MEDIA PAPER. About Drawing the Human Head: 

Ears, Eyes, Nose, Mouth, Hair!


Have you wondered where you go wrong when you attempt to draw a face or a portrait? In this class you will start with the basic skull, and work your way up to the planes of the face, also learning proportions. Then add the skin, practice types of shading and learn to determine where the light is coming from and how that affects highlights and shadows. Then on to each part of the face: eyes, nose, lips, ears, and hair. Anyone can learn to draw the human head with the tools I will teach you. Understand to see faces in a brand new way!

JOIN US FOR AN INTERMEDIATE ACRYLIC PAINTING CLASS IN A GREAT GALLERY SETTING.


This class is for anyone who has had a previous class in acrylics or has learned the basics on their own. We will continue learning new information, & explore new subject matter. Acrylic paints offer a wide variety of ways to apply paint and you will learn: how to mix colors, different kinds of mediums to try, how to extend your supply of paint, or add texture.

Learn to Draw Animals

This class also makes a great Christmas gift!

We will practice basic shapes of animals, step by step, and also work from photos. Learn the secrets to creating great fur, hair, feet and feathers. Learn to break down animals into their basic elements and shapes, see their edges, notice positive & negative space and perspective. Blind contour drawing will enhance your understanding of how to render what you are looking at in a realistic manner quickly. Learn how to shade animals based on lighting and fur direction. You will get a chance to bring in a favorite photo of your pet to draw!

ACRYLIC PAINTING CLASS
AUGUST 5, 2024

This class is for anyone who wants to learn to paint in acrylics or has learned the basics on their own and would like to continue to hone their skills. We will explore the tips and tricks to acrylic painting. Acrylic paints offer a wide variety of ways to apply paint and you will learn about glazing, mediums to extend your supply of paint, add texture or extend the drying time.


What to bring: Small tabletop easel, acrylic paints (the best you can afford for the best pigment color!): Titanium White, Unbleached Titanium, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadium Orange, Cadmium Red Light & Cadmium Red Medium (Hue), Cobalt Blue (Hue), Cerulean, Phthalo, & Ultramarine Blues, Mars Black, , Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre. Brushes: variety large to small: round, filbert and flats, a small detail brush (man made fibers are fine). Palette knife. Matte Acrylic Painting Medium, pad of disposable palette paper, a pencil, eraser, ruler, masking tape. Bring either Canvas paper, Primed canvas panels, or Pre-stretched primed canvas. Size should be no larger than 12" x 12". Two containers for water to clean your brushes, rag or paper towels.

INTERMEDIATE DRAWING 2024



If you have learned all the basics in a beginners drawing class, you are ready to move up to an intermediate drawing class. Here you will work more on adding finesse to your drawings and paying closer attention to detail, perspective, proportions, shading, blending, composition, contrast. You will work in pencil, and pen and ink and explore more different papers that are available for drawing. You will work from still lifes and photos.

What to bring: Set of 12 drawing pencils (hard & soft leads), kneaded eraser, hard white eraser, set of fine line black pens, battery powered pencil sharpener, paper stumps for blending. Bring a selection of drawing papers of your choice. Some great papers are: Bristol Board, Canson Mi-Teintes, Stonehenge, Strathmore, Hot Pressed Watercolor paper.  Minimum class size is 3. Class size limited to 6.

You will work from photos and improve your own personal technique and style. Come meet new friends and see samples of colored pencil artwork from around the globe!

What to bring: Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils (minimum 36 pencil set), battery operated pencil sharpener, kneaded eraser, hard white eraser, 2B pencil, colorless blender pencil or marker, #1 long liner paint brush (for whiskers and hairs).

Some great papers to work on: Canson Mi-Teintes, Stonehenge, Strathmore, Colourfix Sanded Papers. Choose a variety of colors, not just white. Check them out online at www.dickblick.com for great prices. Other great surfaces for colored pencil are hot pressed watercolor paper, vellum bristol board. DO NOT BUY MIXED MEDIA PAPER. IT DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH TOOTH FOR COLORED PENCILS.


Class starts: Monday, August 7, 2023, and runs for eight weeks, 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. No class on Labor day. Fee is $170.00. No refunds. A maximum of 8 students will be admitted, so sign up early to hold a spot. A minimum of 3 students is required to hold class.

Beginners Pastel Painting: Landscape

This is a soft pastel painting class for those of you who have never tried this wonderful medium, and those of you who have tried it and would like a refresher course. This class will introduce you to pastels and you will see how quickly they go down on the surface, and how brilliant the effects are of these pure colors. Each class will start with some information on pastel painting including: how to make different marks: linear or side strokes; ways to blend colors on the paper; and underpainting techniques. Pastels are very versatile and it is easy to create simple or complex paintings. We will concentrate on landscape in this class.

What to bring: Sennilier Half-Stick Soft Pastels set of 40 (or more) assorted half-sticks, Prismacolor NuPastel set of 12, Colourfix Pastel Paper (warm tone pack 9” X 12”, or 10 sheets of white), painting board (to tape drawing paper to), paper towels or rags, paper stumps and an old stiff artist paintbrush (1" wide) for blending, Masking tape 3/4” wide. I have set up a Wish List on DickBlick.com with the recommended supplies, but you may substitute these with soft pastels of your choice. Once you send in your check to hold your spot, I will email you the link to this Wishlist. Do NOT buy “Oil” pastels by mistake. Wear clothing you do not mind getting dirty. Class limited to 5.
