Robin rough

I started on this rough of a robin last night, but of course, got sidetracked again by "Lost". Too bad it's the last season! Really love the characters and the screwed up story line! Are robins a little more red or more orangey? The ones I seem to see are a bit palish reddish orange????

Piping Plovers

I wasn't sure I'd post this, just because the baby bird is so darned ugly it looks like a space creature! Maybe that's why they are endangered...Mom can't bear to look at her babies! LOL! But I live near Newburyport, Massachusetts and they shut down Plum Island for a bit during nesting season so these little creatures can have the beaches to themselves to nest and hopefully get off the endangered species list. Hope you get a kick out of the baby! Or tell me he's the ugliest thing you've every seen and I'll take him down! LOL!!!

A bad day

Well, I started some Piping Plovers (sea birds that are on the endangered list) but the baby birds are the ugliest things that i've ever seen. I may or may not list it here, because you'll think the baby looks odd (and they ARE odd looking creatures!) but I might. I also have a robin and a mourning dove on my calendar to do in the next week. I'd also like to do a rabbit, squirrel and chipmunk, all the soft fuzzy creatures! So much to do, so little time.

I wanted to add a few words about what Danny Gregory is going through with the loss of his loved one. I lost my son 8 years ago in a motorcycle accident and I know what Danny is going through. You feel like the bottom of you heart has fallen out, your spirit crushed, and feel like you are on a roller coaster, one day okay, not great, but bearable, and the next few, you're rolled up in a ball of tears curled up in bed and lost.

It's been 8 years for me, since Kristian left this world, but I feel he's in a better place, and he's looking down on me and smiling and waiting. It won't be long, I keep telling him. Life is so fleeting and unpredictable and most of all, short. So make the most of every day, as Danny has shown us, with our art, and don't be cheap with hugs, or anything else you can share. Make some art, share some art, buy some art, support each other, volunteer to donate some art. We are very lucky to have this connection and this outlet for our sorrows and our joys.

I hope you all have something to celebrate today. My grandaughter will be turning 1 in April and I'm designing an invitation to her birthday party. I'm celebrating that today. I hope soon, Danny will find a way to smile on more days than not. I had to keep repeating to myself "All is well" when I thought my body would turn inside out in pain, and that small prayer helped keep me sane. I have him in my prayers.

Close-up of Molly

Molly from a photo by Ellen

I met a great photographer through RedBubble and she gave me permission to do a drawing of her pet rat, Molly. She just has such a cute, whiskery face, don't you think? See Ellen's photos here: http://www.redbubble.com/people/ellen. They are wonderful!
Enjoy!

ArtsyShark.com

I have the distinct pleasure of announcing that I have been selected to be featured as an "Emerging Artist" on the new blog for emerging artists, called Artsy Shark. I submitted some work and they interviewed me about what inspires me, etc. You can read the interview here: http://www.artsyshark.com/ and PLEASE, leave some nice comments on there, about my work. I'll be reading them! You guys are the best! You keep me inspired to keep creating art, which is my first love. Thanks in advance.

If you are reading this late, and they have a new artist up already, the interviews are stored on the left side of the opening page under "Interviews" and you can find mine there. Have a great day!

Blue Jay Finished!

I worked on this until almost midnight last night, and I'm finally happy with it. I've started adding backgrounds to my birds but I'm not sure about that. I'd love some feedback from all of my bloggers! Thanks!

Beginnings of a Blue Jay

These guys have way more complex feathers then I imagined until I sat down and took a good long look. I had to start adding some of the white so I won't get mixed up. Hope to finish him this week! Here's a beginning rough.

Close-up of Hummingbird

Hummingbird is complete!

This took a long time to finish. Added the flower and the little bugger had so much detail! But I like the way it cam out! Enjoy!

Goldfinch finished!

Well here's my little Goldfinch all decked out as you will see him this late spring and summer. In the fall and winter they are mostly brown, for camouflage I assume, so their predators can't see them in the bare trees. Come spring and summer it's mating time and both the male and female turn brighter yellow, the male, or course, outshining the female in all his finery! I hope you are enjoying all my birds. Now on to the hummingbird which will be making it's appearance soon I hope! I put up a hummingbird feeder last year but it must have been the wrong height or in the wrong place in the garden because I didn't see any. Maybe I'll try the backyard this year, away from the traffic.

Goldfinch sketch part 2

Well it was gloriously warm this weekend, it hit 60! So I didn't get much done indoors. I did do a lot of raking in my garden and the bulbs seem to be waking up!

I did work on this sketch more in the evening and started filling in the details but it's not done yet. I have many more layers of various colors. A yellow bird is never just yellow. I'll be adding lots of greens, oranges and purples for shadows. I'll post when it's done!

Goldfinch sketch

Worked on a friend's logo last night but managed to start a sketch of a Goldfinch.

They are all changing colors around my birdfeeder from a soft brown to a yellower head and by summer they will be brilliant yellow. Here's the pencil sketch. I will be going to pen next and then colored pencil. I had to darken the image because the pencil is so light and will end up being erased in the end when I go over parts of it with pen and ink, and parts will just get colored pencil. I hope to finish him this weekend. We're supposed to get to 53 degrees so I hope to do some raking so my garden doesn't look so messy. Waiting on those bulbs!!!

Yellow Warbler Bird

This little guy is looking into your eyes with a cock of his head. I just loved the angle and had to draw him! Enjoy!

Patchy snow showers today but no accumulation. I can see a few heads popping up in my garden. Hope this is it for snow. I planted 200 bulbs last fall and can hardly wait to see them all in bloom!

A close-up of the face

Flamingo finished

Well I spent many hours on this bird! It was not an easy challenge and I'm glad it's done! I have at least 15 layers of colors in some spots and my pencils got quite a workout. Hope you like it! I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.

We had a horrible storm over the weekend and some friends are still without power in the surrounding towns. We, happily, didn't even loose power. But I was drawing downstairs while my husband had gone to bed, and the loud train noises of the wind made my brilliant german shepherd companion come back downstairs to get me to come upstairs so I would be okay! She seemed to think the pack needed to hunker down together! LOL! I put away my colored pencils and dutifully went upstairs where you could really hear the wind going by like a freight train! I turned on the fan I keep in my room to block out the noise a bit, and after I was safely in bed, and the loud noises were muffled by the fan, she settled down by our feet and went to sleep. Nice to know someone is looking out for you!
